Alone in the Company of Others: A Novel by Kelly Huddleston

With a cast of eccentrics that rivals “The Royal Tenenbaums”, Alone in the Company of Others is about people and their treasured possessions—a running tape recorder, a collection of diplomas, an attic full of disfigured mannequins, or shelves and shelves of books in an all but abandoned public library—and the distinctive role that each of us plays as part of a group dynamic. The book questions where each of us essentially exists—within the singular, the plural, or both.

Have you ever felt alone in the company of others?

I remember countless times when I felt alone in the company of others.

It was a Thursday, 'Classic Cars' night at the Weinerschnitzel, and the parking lot was packed with Thunderbirds and Fords and Cadillacs. My date owned a Thunderbird. He loved eating hot dogs. So did his family, who also owned an assortment of classic cars and who were also there that Thursday night at The Wienersc… Continue

What is it about Vampires?

The March 2009 issue of Harper's Magazine featured a lead article entitled, "The Last Book Party: Publishing Drinks to a Life After Death" by Gideon Lewis-Kraus. In that article the author made it known that the mainstream publishing industry had informally made 2009 'the year of the vampire', so I can only assume that the editors working for those iconic New York publishers had been bitten en mass by a single marsupial antagonist.

Apparently their call for bloodsucking heros and heroines has n… Continue

Reclaiming a Glorious Literary Tradition by David A. Ross

Isn't it obvious yet? Writers and publishers who are publishing their books online, and promoting them through the vast reach of social networks, are engaged in nothing less than a grass roots movement to reclaim art, not only for artists, but for the public at large.

New platforms such as Amazon Kindle and the Microsoft e-book reader have made it possible to publish books and magazines online at little or no cost. At present, nearly 600,000 Kindle readers have been purchased, and sales of Kind… Continue
